As a motorcyclist, you know that you’re more at risk when it comes to crashes and accidents. While a minor accident usually doesn’t do much harm to a car or its driver, it could really do harm to a motorcycle rider and their bike. Here are some ways you can keep yourself from ending up in an accident while riding your motorcycle.

Keep Yourself Visible

Your motorcycle is not nearly as easy to see on the road as a car or truck is, due to its much smaller size. For you as the rider, this means you’ll need to make yourself as visible as possible so that no one can miss you coming. Wearing bright reflective gear in white or neon colors and reflective tape on your helmet, jacket, and bike can help a lot, particularly in the dark.

Using your bike’s lights whenever it’s overcast outside or as the sun sets is also a good idea, since your lights help you to see in addition to making you more visible to others.

Ride with Care

You’ll have to be more defensive while riding your motorcycle than a car driver does. This is because people driving cars and trucks can become distracted or act recklessly by looking at their phones, playing with the radio, eating, or arguing with a passenger. Watch out for drivers who seem to swerve into other lanes, speed up and slow down randomly, brake suddenly, or make very swift and careless maneuvers.
